How to Tell Someone You Like Them

You’ve figured out your feelings for someone and you’re ready to let your emotions out. This is a pretty big step and I applaud you for getting here, but we want to make sure you do this the right way so you get the best response possible. After all, if some guy just came up to me on the street and told me he liked me, I would probably be taken aback and not know what to say because of where we were, especially if people were staring. This is why you need a little planning to figure out how to tell someone you like them. Let’s get into 10 ways you can tell someone today!

1. Make a scrapbook of your memories, and then confess.

You two have shared some sweet times. In fact, that’s probably what made you fall for this person in the first place. It’s now time to collect mementos, photos, notes, and messages you have of your time together and put them all in a scrapbook or something similar. Try to put your memories in order so you can watch your relationship grow as you move through the pages. If you aren’t creative, don’t worry, there are also online scrapbooks that can design the artwork for you – all you have to do is upload photos and type in a few messages. At the end of the scrapbook, write a letter or note and profess your feelings. You’ll take this person on a journey down memory lane and – hopefully – onto love lane.

2. Create a video message expressing your feelings.

We all get nervous in front of others more than we do alone, and naturally so. Having all eyes on you can make anyone forget what they wanted to say, get frazzled, or draw a blank. To avoid this, you can take a video of yourself proclaiming your message instead. The best part is that you can do multiple takes and select the one that comes off the most natural. I would limit this video to five minutes or less because you want this person to receive a video message, not a video movie. You can always elaborate more on your feelings once they respond, so just get to the point, be comfortable, and don’t forget to smile – you’re confessing to love, not murder.

3. Write a short story about the two of you that ends in love.

For those who are better with pen and paper than oral expression, get your inner creative out and draw your crush a storybook. You don’t have to be a good artist to do this – even stick figures count – but if you want to go above and beyond, there are online sites that can create a picture book for you based on your guidelines. As for the storyline, you can create an imaginary story between you both, but be sure it incorporates real aspects of your relationship.

For example, if you’re both big Harry Potter fans, you could write a mini-story where you two are protagonists in a similar landscape. Or, if you both took a fun adventure together in the past, you could replicate it in this story. The key is to change the ending so that you two fall for each other. This is an indirect way of telling this person what you wish would happen between the two of you and it’s also a really cute gift that they can cherish forever.

4. Send them a heartfelt letter.

Another option for the pen-and-paper message is to write a heartfelt letter expressing everything that you’ve been feeling. You can begin with how your friendship blossomed to the moment you realized you liked them and all of the qualities they have that made you fall for them. Hand-deliver the letter to them, leave it on their car, or slip it in their mailbox. You can also opt to send it via mail, but consider paying extra to send it certified so you get confirmation that it was received.

5. Invite them to a formal event while saying how you feel.

There are certain events in life that most people attend with someone else romantically. Great examples would be someone’s date for prom, a work holiday party, a wedding, a family reunion, or a big family party like a golden wedding anniversary or a birthday party for someone aged 60 or above. If you have any of these events coming up, ask this person to be your date and finish it off by saying you would only go to such an event with someone you felt strongly about. They should also be able to grasp the intensity of the date because you’ll also mention that they may be meeting your family… if they’re cool with it, of course.

6. Write the message on their lawn or car.

This goes back to old-school movies and rom-coms but it’s a tactic that can be used throughout the ages. Write out your message on their lawn, whether it’s telling them how you feel, asking them out, or asking them to be official. Do this with stones, flowers, paper, or whatever other material you can get your hands on. If they don’t live alone, make sure you’re aware of when their parents or roommates are home to try and keep the moment private.

7. Throw pebbles at their window, like in old-school movies.

This is another wonderful old move that can be reused. Throw pebbles at their window and stand outside with a boombox or sign to tell them how you feel. I can guarantee they’ll never have someone else do something like that for them and it’s a scene they’ll remember for life.

8. Write a song expressing your feelings and sing it to them.

If you’ve been blessed with a voice, much like I have not, use it to your advantage and write a song for your crush. Again, some services will do this for you – both write the song and sing it – but get creative and try to do it yourself, especially the singing part. This makes it unique, thoughtful, and personal. Sing it to them in person if you’ve got the guts or, if not, you can always record it and give it to them as a link or on a CD.

9. Make a playlist of songs that express how you feel and send it to them.

For those who are more like me and have the singing voice of a dying chicken, why not make a playlist of romantic songs or songs you two enjoy together? You could even write a cryptic message by using the first word of each title on your playlist. For example, if you wanted to just say “I like you,” your playlist could consist of the songs “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” “Like a Prayer,” and “You Make My Dreams Come True.” You could make it like a scavenger hunt or create a playlist so straight-up romantic that your feelings show without further explanation. Send the playlist over to this person and tell them to decipher the message!

10. Use a Valentine’s Day gift to show how you feel.

Why not use the most romantic day of the year to get your point across? That’s right – Halloween. Just kidding, we all know it’s Valentine’s Day. Wait for Valentine’s Day and make plans way in advance to meet up the day of. Choose a gift that says “I like you.” This could be something personal, a super romantic date or dinner, or a standard gift like a big teddy bear. Trust me, no one is going to platonically give you roses and chocolates because you’re homies. It will definitely get your message across.
